A report by a nonprofit think tank in the US showed that between 2001 and 2013, WAL-MART's imports from China led to the loss of 400 thousand jobs in the United States.

In a December 9th report, EPI (Economic Policy Institute) said that the US trade deficit in China over the same period increased by 15.3%. WAL-MART, the world's largest retailer, may be responsible for this.

The agency said that as of 2013, the US trade deficit with China increased by nearly four times, reaching 324 billion 200 million US dollars in 12 years.

Among them, the trade deficit caused by WAL-MART amounted to US $48 billion 100 million.

EPI said: "through WAL-MART's expanding huge distribution network, Chinese goods are exported to the US in large numbers."

From 2001 to 2013, the US trade deficit in China caused a total loss of 3 million 200 thousand jobs in the United States, of which 13% of manufacturing jobs lost.

Robert, an economist at EPI, said: "WAL-MART is one of the main entities of US imports, and the jobs we lose are all well paid manufacturing jobs."

However, WAL-MART's imports from China are mainly concentrated in textiles, furniture and other commodities.

Labour Bureau

Data show that the median income of the United States in these areas is around $12.72 per hour, while the median level of total income in the United States (including part-time and full-time) exceeds US $17 per hour, and the median of full-time income reaches US $24 per hour.

That is to say, the employment income of these manufacturing industries is still relatively low.

In terms of electronic products, the salaries of Foxconn and Pegatron are generally low, with a median salary of $14.38 per hour, much lower than that in the US.

"Therefore,

U.S.A

The loss of these jobs is more low value-added, low tech and low income jobs, "said Vosto, an American commentator." WAL-MART's 400 thousand jobs are mostly low end manufacturing and high income jobs are not lost to China. "

In addition, EPI also said WAL-MART's plans to introduce more U.S. made goods did not ultimately create many practical jobs for the US manufacturing industry.

WAL-MART believes that EPI's analysis report is "flawed".

The company said many of the data in the study were guesswork, because ordinary retailers would not disclose specific import data.

WAL-MART also said that Wal-Mart Store Inc has created many jobs in the supply chain, logistics and distribution.

WAL-MART also quoted a report from Boston Consulting Group, which predicts that by 2023, Wal-Mart Store Inc's US production plan will provide 1 million new jobs to the United States, including 250 thousand directly provided products.

Employment post

In February 19, 2015, WAL-MART employees in Miami, Florida, worked on WAL-MART's production shelf.

In this regard, EPI said that in the next ten years, the US trade deficit will continue to grow and WAL-MART's imports will continue to increase, which will cause more manufacturing jobs to drain, rather than WAL-MART will create more job opportunities.

In 2013, WAL-MART had promised that by 2023, WAL-MART would spend $50 billion to buy goods manufactured locally in the United States.

Later, other critics criticized WAL-MART's massive import of low cost goods, which would reduce employment opportunities in the United States, and the pressure of trade unions. WAL-MART increased the figure to $250 billion.
