The REACH code, entitled "chemical registration, assessment, licensing and restriction bill", will replace the 40 existing directive and regulations on chemicals classification, packaging and labelling directive of the European Union, which require registration, assessment and licensing of all chemicals in the European Union market and into the EU market and implement safety monitoring.

The impact of REACH regulations on China's leather industry is inevitable because every commodity exported to the EU must comply with the European Union's law.

REACH regulations may lead to a reduction in available tannery materials; chemical plants will encourage customers to use chemicals more carefully; retailers will pay more attention to the commodities they are handling; European law will require distributors to check the safety of products and keep records.

Retailers in the EU are no longer just focusing on the quality of goods. They may also care about whether they are genuine leather.

Does it have good average quality?

Can the product be used normally and ensure safety?

Are slaughtering animals in line with specifications?

Do workers have good treatment?

Whether there are adverse environmental factors.

For example, in addition to the material made of animal skin made of tanning and pliable after the process of tanning and dehairy, the standard leather "2780" specifies that the film thickness of leather should be less than 0.15 millimeters. If the product meets the relevant specifications, it will involve the safety of products, that is, the content of restricted chemicals.

In order to prevent the occurrence of problems related to restricted substances, enterprises must understand the relevant regulations and the various restrictions put forward by customers, and select chemicals according to the relevant requirements. The suppliers should be checked by the recognized institutions, and inform the customers of the relevant results.

There are now clearly defined chemicals including six valent chromium, formaldehyde, azo dyes, pentachlorophenol PCP, cadmium, graphite, mercury, nickel, TBT, NPEO, phthalate esters, insecticides, flame retardants and so on.

However, in the long run, the attitude of REACH to actively protect human health and natural environment is worthy of respect and admiration.

We have seen some encouraging changes in the development of the industry: chemical enterprises have realized that helping customers reduce environmental pollution is much better than being forced to stop production by the government. Therefore, the chemical factory has begun to focus on services and encourage tanneries to use chemical raw materials correctly, which will help tanning enterprises to improve tanning technology and reduce waste.
